☕ Good morning! It's Thursday, May 28th
SEVENTY48 is back, with human-powered vessels racing 70 miles from our waterfront to Port Townsend. We've also got a new coffee drive-thru opening in North Tacoma, recent orca sightings at Owen Beach, and a packed weekend lineup.
Let's dive in.

⛵ Seventy48
70 Miles. 48 Hours. No Motor.
A human-powered boat race launches from our waterfront this month
On the evening of May 29th, a fleet of kayaks, rowboats, and paddleboards will push off from Tacoma's Thea Foss Waterway and head north — 70 miles north, to Port Townsend. No engines, no support crews, 48 hours on the clock. That's SEVENTY48.
The rules are almost insultingly simple: human power only. Teams (or solo competitors) must reach Port Townsend by 7 PM on May 31st or they're out. What they're really racing against, as the organizers put it, is themselves.
If you're near the waterfront on the 29th, go watch the start or follow it here. It's the kind of thing you don't forget.

Owen Beach is Teeming with Wildlife This Week
It’s been a busy few days on the Tacoma shoreline. On Monday, beachgoers got a clear view of a transient orca pod (the T124A1 group) swimming close to the coast alongside a brand-new calf. Check out all the incredible orca photos from ProjectBokehPhoto on Reddit.

Down on the rocks, recent extreme low tides have exposed an unusual number of sea stars, crabs, and octopuses in the tide pools. If you head out to look for them, experts from the Tacoma Nature Center remind beachgoers to give the octopuses space to crawl back to the water on their own and to always use wet fingers when handling any marine life.
